Cold, Wet Season So Far

Is the weather ever going to cooperate?

Cold, wet springs can have a drastic effect on plant vigor.  It can be in the grower' best interest to do everything they can to help the young plants get off to the best start possible.

Plants use their own energy to take up phosphate. When plants are young and under stress, they have a hard time getting enough phosphate. If you use a starter fertilizer that is high in phosphate, the plant will have a better chance of getting the required amount.

There are products available to increase the vigor of your plants, such as seed treatments and root enhancers. Seed treatments will contain insecticides and fungicides that will help the plant get off to a more healthy start. Examples of these products are Kickstart or Apron MAXX. Root enhancers like Asset RS will help the plant have an increased root mass, which can enable it take up fertilizer early in the summer and survive dry weather.

State %   State %   State %

IA 33   MO 62   SD 11
KS 49   NE 32   WI 8

Notice In the table above that some states experienced early corn planting this month. Last week's high temperatures will tend to accelerate cutworm growth. Several growers are finding cutworms in cornfields much earlier than normal this year. So if you haven't scouted your cornfields yet, do it very soon.

Warrior is an excellent choice for preventative control of cutworms, and it may also be used as a tank mix partner with other pesticides as well. Use rates for Warrior range from 1.9 to 3.2 ounces per acre. See your Lake's Farm Service representative to place your Warrior order today!

April Weather Data

In South Bend, our average temperature for the month of April was 49.8°. The highest temperature recorded was 87° on April 15th. The lowest recorded temperature for the month was 20° on April 6th. Total recorded precipitation for the month was 3.40 inches, which is actually -0.22 inches from normal. The problem was, this precipitation was recorded as being produced on 24 days-this left only six days during the month of April with no precipitation! It's no wonder we are having trouble getting out into the fields!
